The Festival of Blackboards is an annual programme organised by Cubitt Education. An energetic and grassroots series of events that aims to bring national issues and ideas into local forums.
Programmed as a series of open seminars and public events, each with a specific focus, the Festival of Blackboards aims to provide participants with inspiration, a context for discussion and a space for creative thinking.
The Festival of Blackboards 2014 will focus on the theme of power and the arts. From creative activism on Spa Fields to an in-depth seminar looking at empowerment in dance, design and artistic collaboration, the Festival will aim to inspire families, artists, teachers, dancers, scientists and local people of all ages.
The Festival of Blackboards 2014 is produced in partnership with Islington Council, Islington Arts and Education Strategy Group and Sadler's Wells.
About Cubitt:
Cubitt Education is the education and community programme at Cubitt Gallery and Studios, a small-scale, Arts Council-funded visual arts organisation in Angel, Islington.
Cubitt Gallery support a curatorial bursary programme giving young curators the opportunity to develop a programme over an 18-month period, profiling emerging or overlooked artists in a productive and critical context, commissioning new work where possible.
Cubitt Studios are home to a community of practicing artists. The Cubitt members set up the organisation in the 1990's and each Studio Holder has a voluntary jobs as part of the running of the organisation.
Cubitt Education is a localised, but large-scale programme that connects practicing artists with schools, community centres and other settings across Islington. Through our unique training programme, the Cubitt School for Artist Educators, we support artists to develop the skills needed to work effectively within educational and community settings. We develop initiatives that meet local needs, including: a programme of artist-led after school clubs; a tutoring scheme for talented young people and Cubitt Seniors Art School- high quality art workshops and art history lectures for local over-55's.
